Refrigerator points

Yesterday I was at a seminar in which the topic included the way films portray science. At one point an attendee asked whether or not there was any way to get Hollywood filmmakers to portray science more accurately.

A single panelist, a physicist and educator who was speaking from extended knowledge dealing with Hollywood, explained that filmmakers are targeted only on making a item, and by far the most useful element of that product, from their point of view, is the storytelling. Every thing is in service to that.

He mentioned that the goal of Hollywood filmmakers is to make any idea, no matter how outrageous and implausible, just believable adequate — in the context of the scene — that you will accept that concept even though you are watching the movie.

If, later that evening, you are reaching for a snack in the refrigerator, and it all of a sudden occurs to you that some thing in the film didn’t make any sense, then the filmmakers are pleased, due to the fact that believed didn’t happen to you in the theatre.

In reality, he explained, such plot factors have their own technical expression (a expression which, until finally right now, can not be discovered by a Google search). They are referred in the biz as “refrigerator points”.
