The mouse you know

I attended a talk this morning by Frans B. M. de Waal, who talked about the in depth results from his investigation team on cooperative and ethical behavior amongst non-people.

The audience laughed in delight at experiments that showed an angry capuchin monkey demanding equal pay out for equal work, a chimpanzee handing the proper equipment to an additional chimpanzee so the latter could total an assembly operation, elephants coming up with surprising inventions to assist every other with cooperative duties, and an ape refusing a reward from a human unless a equitable share was also offered to another ape.

But there was a single point wherever the audience just went thoughtfully silent. Describing an experiment that showed that a mouse becomes considerably a lot more delicate to discomfort after it has seen yet another mouse in discomfort (an experiment that, needless to say, raises its very own ethical troubles), de Waal mentioned that the effect is only observed if the mouse is aware of the other mouse.

It might have been the first time most folks in the audience had ever thought about friendship among mice.
