Take a moment to consider

I seldom comment on politics these days, but I’m really shaken up by what happened not too long ago in Florida. A seventeen year old boy walking back residence from a nearby candy shop was shot dead by a guy with a gun. The boy was unarmed. The man was not arrested for killing the boy.

The reason the guy was not arrested was that he stated that he had felt threatened by the boy. It seems that below current Florida law, generating such a statement is adequate grounds to keep away from being arrested for shooting, and killing, an unarmed boy or lady.

If you are studying this, and you have a son or daughter, you might take a moment to contemplate that there are areas in the United States of America today in which a stranger with a gun can legally shoot your kid to death whilst your kid is strolling down the street, even right in your personal neighborhood.

Until these last handful of days, I had not known that. I’m guessing you had not acknowledged that either.

Plots to take over the world

The topology of the puzzling shape I discussed in yesterday’s post is really fascinating. In some methods it acts like a square, but a quite strange square.

Picture that you lived in a property on a square plot of land. On all 4 sides you have neighbors, and when you step from your property onto an adjoining home, that neighboring yard would seem like a perfectly typical square. So wherever you go, every little thing seems fine and undistorted.

But the guidelines for travel are a small intriguing, simply because issues act type of funny at some of the corners. Your neighborhood to the southwest and northeast appears normal — each and every neighbor shares one particular other mutual neighbor among them.

But to the southeast issues are a bit stranger. Your neighbors there share a border with every other — it takes only three border crossings and proper-angle turns to get back into your personal yard. And your neighbors to the northwest have two neighboring yards in between them — close to that shared corner, it will take five border crossings and right-angle turns to get back into your very own yard:

As we currently know from the posts of the final two days, the planet you are living on consists of sixty plots of land, and the topology of that planet is a sphere.
